UMD SPORTS STORY

By

UMD bulldogs got “killed” on Friday by St. Cloud State at the new Amsoil area. The final score of the first game was 8-2. Which was stunning to UMD fans. Bulldogs are ranked 1 in the nation and St. Cloud State is ranked 9. The game on Saturday went a lot better. In the beginning of the game the Bulldogs fell behind by three goals, yet finished with a 3-3 overtime tie in the rematch before 6,713 fans. UMD (18-6-5 overall) avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this season. St. Cloud State scored twice in 35 seconds in the middle of the first period. If Friday’s home crowd was stunned, tonight’s fans were also super stunned  for the first period and early in the second.

St. Cloud recorded a 10th straight goal over two nights just 23 seconds into the second period for a 3-0 lead. Justin Fontaine scored the first goal for UMD. His 18th goal of the season, 59th of his career and 145th career point (to pass Brett Hull.) Then J.T Brown scored the next point at 5:35 to go in the 2nd period, making it 2-3 STC. Jake Hendrickson with the 3rd goal at 8:04 left in the 3rd Period.

The bulldogs were coming from their worst defeat since a loss at Minnesota 7-0 on March 3, 2006. It was the worst lost since November 30, 2001 at the DECC losing 8-2, and it was the first time an opponent had scored eight goals against the Bulldogs since an 8-3 loss at North Dakota on Nov. 23, 2007. Friday’s loss dropped UMD from first to third in the league, two points behind number one Denver and one point behind North Dakota. UMD is going on the road for the first time this weekend to Mankato.
